Over the weekend we ventured down to Madera Canyon in Southern Arizona. The creek was running, the sun shining, and the birds were singing. The whole trip brought about a moment of clarity that I have not had for quite sometime now and I am very thankful for it. There we saw all the commom canyon birds like the Mexican Jays, Bridled Titmice, Yellow-eyed Juncos and Acorn Woodpeckers, but we also got a great view of a Swainson's Hawk on top of a powerline pole.

Man Crow, you see a lot of birds. Many of which I've never even heard of. =) There's Harris' Hawks that live by my house down in Phoenix, and I got a shot of one when I was down over Christmas. Here it is for those of you who would like to see it. If this isn't a Harris' Hawk then feel free to smack me. I'm not too good at recognising birds, but I'm learning! Hehe... - Kit

Migration is picking up folks! I am so used to seeing the same old birds out there in the field that when I hear a new sound I almost have a heart attack! This past week out at Diablo Canyon/ Meteor Crater/ Raymond Wildlife Area, I was fortunate enough to see a Say's Phoebe, many Killdeer, Green-winged and Cinnamon Teals. Buffleheads, and the majestic Northern Pintail! It was nice seeing some color out there inthe desert! Also, I was circled by a curious and young Cooper's Hawk for a while, unitl they finally got bored of the guy with the big binoculars (and even bigger smile).

Your smile must have been freakishly big. o.o;
That's great though, I'll have to come out there some time just to check out all the great birds. I've been seeing some new faces around campus, too, with some great calls. I don't know what any of them are, but it's fun to see them anyway. =) Some of them are around their breast area, but they're too small to be robins and they look a bit different (I think - they were all high up in trees). There were a few of them out this morning and they have really pretty calls.

I have been seeing a ton of American Robins lately Kit, and they have been singing up a storm. They can vary greatly in size and color, and especially if they are high up in a tree (where they normally like to be) it might be hard to tell what they are, but the song is unmistakable.....if you'd like to hear it real quick, go here: www.mbr-pwrc.usgs.gov/id/framlst/i7610id.html, and click the Song button. If it wasn't an American Robin, it defenitly could have been something else because migration has officially begun!

Ok, I know I have not been posting much lately and I especially do not post here...due to my lack of knowledge on birds but thanks to my new Sibley's field guide I am getting better! Over the weekend, I went out to Lake Mary to attempt to fish with Scott and his buddy Nick...luckily I had my spotting scope cause Scott saw some birds floating on the water across the lake...they were Green-winged Teals. By the way, if anyone wants to see an amazing sight go check out Lake Mary...both upper and lower are at the highest level I have ever seen! I will not be posting in fish section since we did not catch anything! Today after briefly visiting with Crow and Cinder the Wonder dog, I was walking home and at the base of the Dome I saw a Northern Flicker, actually heard him first then saw him sitting on the fence! This bird sighting stuff is alright...now I just gotta see one of those many Red-tailed Hawks, eh Crow!?

All right! A competition! Migration is in full swing these days, at least out in the high desert. Bird surveys this week revealed a ton of new species starting to come through. Sage Thrashers, American Robins, Vesper and White-crowned Sparrows, and a Wilson's Snipe (formally known as the Common Snipe), all were spotted amongst the stillness of the desert out by Meteor Crater/Diablo Canyon. Hopefully my next sightings will be from the road as Sparrowhawk, Cinder the wonder dog and I head back East. If I can find a computer along the way, I'll drop a posting or 2.

Hi crow, I know you're bird expert in the club! I saw a pair of waterfowl which I believe they are Mallard duck... Can you tell from the picture? the last time I saw these waterfowls was in Oregon, I never thought they are here but only a pair.... shoot, i don't know how to manually insert image here... Mind I ask how to do that? Thanks!

Hiya Shapeshifter. In order to insert a photo you first have to have the photo online somewhere. A popular place to upload photos seems to be photobucket.com. I haven't used their service before, but I know a lot of people use that one so it's probably decent.
Once you have the image uploaded somewhere, take note of its URL. You can copy the images URL by right clicking the image and selecting "copy image location".
When you want to put the image into a post on this forum, type (IMG) but use [] instead of () and then paste the URL. After pasting the URL type (/URL) but again with [] instead of ().
Hope that helps. I know it's a bit confusing. @_@

OK, so my Spring Break sightings were both ordinary and pretty wild! I spent most of the week at my parents house in North Phoenix but on the first Saturday I went out to visit my sister in New River...it was a pretty crappy day so out there there was not much activity but by the time we left the sun was coming out and as we were driving home I saw 2 raptors circling...as we approached them they both landed on the road...2 Red-tails! I am pretty sure they were and not just saying it, Crow! ;D
Now at my parents, I saw a female Cardinal, plenty of Grackels and European Starlings, Mourning Doves, House Sparrows, Mockingbirds...all the common sightings! I also saw the resident Kestrel...still not sure if it is a male or female though, could not tell if it was bobbing its tail or not but it has apparently taken residence in the old palm tree! The coolest sighting though happened again on the first Saturday, I was walking my dog out into the backyard and as I turned the corner a Green Heron flew up from my mom's pond! He landed on the phone line so I got a pretty good look and good thing I had my trusty Sibley's guide!
I have some pics so as soon as I post them somewhere I will get them on here!
