Winter birding in Flagstaff 09 has been slow! But the Bald Eagle sightings for me have been abundent. Yesterday (Feb 11) there were 3 (!) Bald Eagles near the Walnut Canyon exit on I-40, hanging out up in a large ponderosa snag. I also saw a ton of them down Lake Mary Rd about 1 week ago, and saw the most I have every seen together (outside of Alaska) on Highway 260, midway between Camp Verde and the intersection with the Payson highway, there wer 7 eagles there on Jan 29, 2009.
My strangest bird sighting this winter though had to be a lone Great-blue Heron out at Kachina Wetlands on January 26th. It was a freezing cold evening, and the water was all frozen, yet there it was. Hope it makes it through the winter wherever it was heading.
