Field Technicians (3 positions) needed
FROG AND TURTLE SURVEYS IN WESTERN IOWA
Applicants will be assisting with a research project in western Iowa evaluating turtle/amphibian use of, and reproductive success in, several classes of wetlands that have been created to mitigate wetland losses in the Missouri River floodplain. Duties include maintaining drift fences and pitfall traps, marking frogs, trapping turtles, and conducting frog-call surveys. Additional duties may include data entry. Field work will be conducted in and around created wetlands in the Missouri River floodplain and applicants must have the physical ability to work long hours outdoors, sometimes at night, in a variety of weather conditions. Drs. David Otis and Rolf Koford, both with the U.S. Geological Survey’s Cooperative Research Unit Program, will oversee the project. Both are collaborating faculty members in the Department of Natural Resource Ecology and management at Iowa State University. Other project partners are the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (COE) and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. Field technicians will work and interact with this diverse group.
Qualifications: Qualified applicants must have the ability to identify Midwestern frogs by sight and sound. Other requirements include the ability to work independently or as part of a team and a strong work ethic. Applicants must have a valid driver’s license and clean driving record. Strong applicants will have experience conducting frog-call surveys.
Resources: Vehicles, housing, and necessary field equipment will be provided.
Location: Field work will be conducted in Iowa on land managed by the COE in the Missouri River floodplain.
Employment Dates: Variable start and end dates, from March 23 - August 21, 2009. These positions are temporary, full time, 40 hours per week.
Salary: $10.00-12.00 per hour, depending on experience and anticipated duties.
