Anybody absolutley love Madera Canyon??? I sure do. I used to live there for three years and will cherish every moment of that. Not just because of the birds, even though it is no doubt a premier birding spot for the whole country, but because of the wilderness of the sky islands and how unique that ecosystem truly is.
What follows is a letter from my brother Luis who is the president of Friends of Madera Canyon, and they need a lot of help in many different ways if any one is interested.
And if you can't donate to them, or volunteer some time, then the next best thing would be to go and enjoy Madera Canyon, so that you too can see how amazing it is!
Dear Birders,
Madera Canyon is threatened by the proposed development of a 150+ home urban style subdivision clustered about a mile from the entrance to the Canyon. Dr. West is correct in his observation that we birders must come together to help protect this legendary canyon for future generations. The Friends of Madera Canyon have invested thousands of dollars to protect the Canyon's greater ecosystem, but does not have the financial resources necessary to keep up the good fight.
Madera Canyon was put on the birding map over 50 years ago when Roger Tory Peterson and James Fisher published Wild America. Since that time, hundreds of thousands of birders have made the pilgrimage to Madera Canyon in search of Crescent-chested Warbler, Aztec Thrush, Elegant Trogon, and the 230+ bird species known to frequent this Sky Island ecosystem. We wonder how many "life birds" have been obtained by birders in Madera Canyon?
It is time for us to stand up and put our money/time/effort into saving a Southern Arizona treasure. Otherwise, the squeeze-toy call of the Sulphur-bellied Flycatcher may no longer be heard as you hike along Madera Creek in search of the fabled Montezuma Quail.
You can stand up and be counted by contacting the Friends of Madera Canyon at: www.friendsofmaderacanyon.org
