Emily and I were walking downtown Wednesday night, kind of by the library, we were on our way to a bluegrass show at the Orpheum and the night was magical. I saw something out of the corner of my eye in the dark across the street. Cat, I thought. But there was something wild about it, it was moving so fast down the sidewalk that I would occasionally lose sight of it, and it would appear moments later as if it were walking between moments or even through time. It turns out it was a Grey Fox, and as Emily and I stopped walking, our breath hanging in front of us in the cold, night air, the fox crossed the street and came within about 3 ft of us. It stopped and looked casually over at us, then vanished once again. Seconds later we saw it trotting along the top of an impossibly high wood fence, making no noise what so ever. The music at the bluegrass show sounded just a little sweeter after that experience.

Oooh man I am so jealous of you guys. >.< That's just awesome. I've wanted to see a fox since I came up here...and you got so close to one! That's so lucky! And bluegrass is fun, too. ^_^

Ah a cute little fawn. ^_^; Those are great pics Stinger! I'd like to run accross something other than a squirrel to photograph. =) I took a bunch of pics of a squirrel the other day but I wasn't too happy with how they turned out. I might try to post one of them though. ^_^

Here's some mule deer I saw today on the side of the road to Walnut Canyon. I actually saw two heards of them. There must be a lot out there. o.o In the top picture you can see a fawn standing in front. At the bottom is a picture of something unknown cause they are far away and hidden by the trees. Hope you guys can identify them!

Kitfox.... Those pictures took forever to load on my excrutiatingly slow dial-up service, but it was worth it!!!! Walnut Canyon is a great place indeed, if you get a chance to tell folks about it in the Great Areas for Wildlife Viewing thread, that would be most gracious. I don't think its really ever been mentioned there before.
As that third picture was loading I could have sworn you had captured the Fenris Wolf on film, then I thought they were Spotted Hyenas from some forested section of Africa. I then noticed that the eyes were glowing in one of them and thus could only deduce they were Hounds of Hell of some sort. Thanks for the great picture to get my imagination flowing on this wonderful morning! Once it was done loading though, it appears to be a couple of young Elk. Buyt if you crop that picture so that the legs were not showing, I am sure you could get it printed in any number of monster books. Great shots!

Great pics Kit!!!
Yup, you snapped a picture of a couple cow(female) elk from what I can tell. I do not see any antlers on either of them and this time of year all the bulls should be antlered up for the rut!
Nice Muleys too!! So, besides the ears, how can you tell they are Muleys?
Just a little quiz on this fine snowy Sunday!

I know the one based on the antlers... [/img] Mule Deer ------ Whitetail Deer The mule deer has bifurcated antlers (forked beams), where as the Whitetail has only two beams, and all the tines sprout up from the main stalk. But the one fieldmark that I always look for from a distance is the black patch on the forehead (and the tail of course) . Hey, this is fun! O.K, here is my quiz for the day....how do you tell a male and female Pronghorn Antelope apart (and extra credit goes to whoever gives a field mark that is not based on antler size )

Nice one man!! Great answers, the main one I was thinking of was the tail. It is most noticable in the second pic of Kit's. The Muleys have a thin black-tipped tail and you see the white butt-patch all the time, where as white-tails have a wide tail and the butt-patch is most noticable only when they flag their tail in the air!
No to answer your question: I will give you the none horn answer. Bucks have black bands that run from their eyes down their muzzles to a black nose and they also have a black neck patch!
And you are right, thi8s is fun...lets keep it going. I will try to come up with another today and post it when I get out of class, which I see you in anyways!

Woohoo!! And you get extra-credit, or, in our case, I guess I'll have to buy you a beer at the Bowling Tournament. I hear ya man, this is a good time...........I'll go and create a Wildlife Quiz thread real quick.

Dang, I haven't been online in awhile. This quiz stuff is great! The pics are fantastic as well.
I just wanted to tell ya'll about the cow elk we caught the other day. She was great. Really strong vivacious, and had a huge neck. We had to get a small peice of another collar to modify a collar to fit her. Really neat!

Quick thinking with the collar! Another Gagnon-Eaglewoman exclusive invention!
